How to setup an Ad Hoc WiFi Network ....

For this setup, I only use two computers. I use a laptop with WiFi and a desktop computer with usb wireless adapter. Both computers are running WindowsXP SP2.

The setup
1. Open the Network Connection window by right clicking My Network Places and choose Properties. Alternatively, click Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections

2. Right click on Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties.

3. Click the Wireless Networks tab, under preferred networks, choose Add…
4. Type the Network name (SSID)
5. For Network Authentication: choose Shared. Choose Disable for Data encryption.
6. Uncheck the “ The key is provided to me automatically and enter the Network key” (5 or 13 characters). Don’t forget to confirm the network key.
7. Last one. Check the “This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network; wireless access points are not used” box.
8. Repeat step 1 to 7 for next computer.

Open the Wireless Network Connection Status window and click on Support tab.
You should see something like this.
The laptop
Address Type: Automatic Private Address
IP Address: 169.254.95.126
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

The Desktop
Address Type: Automatic Private Address
IP Address: 169.254.170.241
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

Let say I share something on the desktop, it can be accessed by Click Start ->Run. Type \\169.254.170.241 and click ok.
